Upon the success of our first Tick Citizen Science online workshop earlier this year, IDAlert facilitated a highly anticipated second Tick Citizen Science Workshop on the 12th November 2025. The online workshop brought together over 20 participants, predominantly from vector-based citizen science backgrounds, working across many European countries, including France, Italy, Hungary and the Netherlands.
Through engaging presentations and discussions, the session welcomed specialists to collaborate with one another to explore the opportunities and challenges of citizen science in tick and tick-borne disease prevention across Europe. The next steps in forming the working group’s co-authored article on citizen science initiatives in Europe were also discussed, with the possibility of this publication gaining a lot of engagement from participants wanting to get involved and help disseminate knowledge across Europe.
Led by Rebeka Ryvola de Kremer, of the Red Cross Red Crescent Climate Centre, the workshop also excitedly introduced the art-science tick campaign: Time is Ticking. This co-designed tick campaign aims to raise public awareness about ticks, their impact on health and how to take part in citizen science initiatives.
With the initiation of the first Tick Citizen Science Workshop, this session continued to support the development of an innovative Tick Citizen Science community of practice in Europe. The workshop created a space for specialists to collaborate and share insights on advancing tick monitoring and surveillance across Europe as the climate continues to change.
We look forward to keeping you updated with more activities and initiatives as the working group continues to grow!
