Ticks are one of the vectors studied as part of IDAlert’s objective to understand and respond to health threats posed by climate change. Our case study in Sweden, led by the Swedish National Veterinary Institute (SVA), uses citizen science for tick surveillance. By involving the public in reporting tick sightings and collecting data, we are gaining valuable insights into how changing environmental conditions are influencing the distribution of ticks and the risks they pose to both humans and animals.
In this context, IDAlert organised an online workshop dedicated to Tick Citizen Science on 14 May 2025. It brought specialists together to explore the role of citizen science in tick and tick-borne disease surveillance across Europe.
With over 36 participants from more than 11 countries-including Sweden, France, the Czech Republic, and Norway-the workshop brought together a diverse group of experts. Attendees represented a wide range of fields, such as pathogen research, veterinary science, One Health, AI and deep learning, ecology, and public health.
The workshop featured presentations on the latest tools and approaches in tick citizen science across Europe, including the use of AI for tick identification and innovative risk mapping techniques. These sessions led to valuable discussions on best practices for protecting public health when handling ticks, which may carry pathogens of significant concern.
Participants were invited to pitch their own tick surveillance tools, creating an interactive space for innovation and knowledge exchange. In smaller breakout groups, attendees explored key challenges such as the complexities of tick surveillance, sustaining public and citizen science engagement, translating research into policy, and leveraging digital tools to maintain momentum and foster ongoing development in this novel space.
This workshop has set the stage for building a community of practice in Tick Citizen Science, fostering collaboration and data sharing to enhance tick surveillance across Europe.
More activities and initiatives will be undertaken-updates will follow!
